The procedures for coordinating newsgroup management within the UK hierarchy

GUIDELINES FOR UK USENET MENTORS
The following Guidelines were accepted on 13 Jul 2000 by a vote with 27 votes
in favour and 8 votes against.
GUIDELINES FOR UK USENET MENTORS
1. There shall be an organization called UK USENET MENTORS, its purpose
being to help proponents with naming, wording of charters, use of
available resources, submission of proposal. Normally, mentoring advice
would cease when either a fast-track request or CFV was requested and
in many cases would end when a successful submission to
uk.net.news.announce was made.
2. Use of uk mentors is NOT a required part of submitting an RFD, but
is recomended to those who are unfamilar with the RFD process, and
highly recomended to first time uk.* proponents.
3. The organization shall be headed by either a committee member or
person appointed by the commitee who shall assume a management and
oversight role only. It will mainly communicate by an internal mailing
list and via a web page for external information.
4. Any person within uk.* who is not a committee member may apply to
become a uk-mentor by approaching the oversight mentor. It is strongly
recommended that the candidate mentor should have successfully been a
proponent for a proposal in uk.*. It is also suggested that candidate
mentors are familiar with the Guidelines and with current activity and
trends within uk.net.news.*.
5. UK-Mentors would be expected to have a good understanding of
procedures within uk.* and be able to assist naming, wording of
charters, help with resources and timetabling of proposals.
6. Mentors shall attempt to act in a non-judgemental manner at all
times regardless of their opinions of proponent or subject matter. They
shall attempt to be non-directive, giving the proponent a number of
suggested options where it is possible to do so. These options may
include creation in other heirarchies or as mailing lists where
7. Any person not persistently keeping up to these standards may be
removed from the list by a general agreement of those on the uk-mentors
mailing list. Any proposals being mentored by a removed person shall be
reassigned by the oversight mentor to other mentors.
8. Proponents may either approach the uk-mentors directly using a
submission email address or may be referred to the uk-mentors by
Control or the committee.
9. The usual situation shall be for one mentor to be assigned to one
proposal by the oversight mentor, however, in certain circumstances the
mentor may wish either guidance on specific points from the mailing
list or work the whole proposal through with the mailing list.
10. Assignment of mentors should be done by volunteering and mentors
must not take on proposals with which they have disagreements on the
subject matter. In addition, Mentors should also be aware of the
pitfalls of mentoring a proposal that they have great personal interest
in. Mentors or proponents may request of the oversight mentor that they
reassign the mentoring of the proposal should a personality clash
